OUR CHINESE FRIEND, 王嘉莹 (Wáng Jiāyíng)

She was born on 14 November 1989 in Harbin, northeast China. After graduating from the University of Science and Technology in Beijing with major in Environmental Engineering and minor in Public Administration, she joined in August 2012 a Masters program at NUS in the same topic as her major, which she successfully concluded this year.
Always in a good mood, Jiāyíng likes to sing, and she is very good at it; she also enjoys spicy food, action movies and traveling.

I was born on 10 February 1988 in Caracas, Venezuela. At the age of 19 I moved to Switzerland, where I got a Bachelor+Masters Degree in Physics from the ETH Zurich. I am currently doing some research for my PhD at the Centre for Quantum Technologies (CQT) at NUS. I like to travel and to do sports, like volleyball, bowling and to ski. Also enjoy learning more about the natural sciences in general.
I would say, the filming was quick and smooth. The story was fun and short, making the filming much more enjoyable. Thanks one more time to Jiaying for correcting the script and helping us with the pronuntiation. It can be a little confusing for the viewer when we have to explain so many words in such a reduced time, which is the case of the audio script, where we introduced many expressions, some of them did not even appear in the video. The audio recordings were clear and understandable. In my case, the edition of the video was, like always, time consuming, specially when synchronizing the audio recordings with the texts.

Ever since I moved to Singapore in 2007, I have always wanted to learn Chinese language. When I found out that NUS offers a formal Chinese lesson starting from scratch, I decided to learn Chinese as my third language. And as I took Chinese 1 last semester, I really enjoyed learning it and have decided to continue my learning by taking Chinese 2 this semester!
First of all, it was really a fun project. The group discussion we had before writing the script helped us to craft the outline and hence, writing the script was done really quickly. This project generally helped me to be familiar with Chinese phrases used in daily conversation. Moreover, I had a chance to revise what I have learned from Chinese 1 while writing the script.

I am a year 1 student from FASS and am majoring in Economics. Chinese is one of my favorite module because after taking the class, I can understand some of things that my friends say in Chinese. I wish to continue learning Chinese and hopefully in the future, I will be able to converse with my Chinese and Singaporean friends in Chinese language!
Writing script was easier this time as I was more used to typing Chinese on my laptop as compared to last time. In addition, with the prior knowledge of basic Chinese from the Chinese Level 1 class, I was more at ease, forming sentences and coming out with the lines in Chinese. And I was happy that we could decide on our plot really fast and start filming during the recess week. So we had enough time to prepare and shoot the video. Jia Ying was really nice to help us out with the script and play a role in the video. She proof read our script and suggested us to change some of the awkward expressions. We learnt a lot in the process of writing the script and filming the video.I hope the video will benefit you as much as it benefited me ;) We had so much fun filming the video and hope you guys enjoy the video too!

I am born on 4th Jun 1993. I came to Singapore in 2007 and spent my secondary and high school years here. I am now majoring in Life science in NUS and studying Chinese too:) I go for life saving trainings after the lessons. I love to spend time with my friends exercising or cooking. New activity that I have tried recently is surfing at Sentosa beach and it is just too exciting to quit. I guess I'll be spending rest of my saturday surfing with my life saving friends for this semester!
This project was certainly one of the best projects that I ever did with my friends. During our first meeting we were very quick to come out with the outline for this project as all of us had similar things on our mind. Even if there are different things, we tried to come to a consensus and it was not a tough job at all. I enjoyed writing the audio script as I imagined myself to be a Chinese teacher, teaching Chinese to non Chinese speakers. Through this process I was also able to reinforce my knowledge, just like how people learn the most effectively as they teach! While it was quite difficult to memorize the script, i believe that it is through such work that challenges my ability, I grow and learn. I appreciate my group members who made this whole project so enjoyable to work on!!

I was born on 22 November 1992 in Korea and completed my primary school education there. I moved to Singapore in 2005 when I was a secondary 1 student. I've always wanted to learn Chinese but I just couldn't find time to as I took Japanese as my second language in secondary school and JC. That is why it means so much to me to be able to study Chinese in NUS! I enjoyed Chinese 1 so much and I am glad I decided to carry on with Chinese 2 because it is just as interesting and fulfilling.
It was so much fun doing up this project, from discussion on the ideas for the script, to the actual recording itself! It is amazing how we can apply what we learn from textbook in daily life situations. While trying to explain some of the grammar/concepts of the words, I realised that there were parts I didn't understand as much as I thought I did. Also, audio recording was more tedious than expected because when only the voice was heard, even minor mistakes in pronunciation or tone became very noticeable. So, doing the project actually helped to deepen my knowledge and improve my Chinese pronunciation at the same time. My group has tried our best to make the podcast simple yet clear so that we could help others in learning Chinese effectively! Hope you enjoy it :)
